Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release (MFR), as developed and taught by John Barnes PT, is a gentle hands-on approach used to free up fascial restrictions. The therapist applies gentle sustained pressure into the restriction in a variety of ways, allowing permanent elongation of the tissue. As fascial restrictions are freed, you begin to have decreased pain, enhancement of daily functional abilities, greater mobility, and improved structural balance and integrity.

Some common symptoms which can be addressed by MFR are: general discomfort, chronic pain, sporting injuries, headache, back pain, whiplash injury, general injury, muscle spasms, restriction of motion, poor posture and specific ailments related to everyday living such as carpal tunnel and neurological dysfunction. As fascial restrictions release, your range of motion usually increases and strain patterns will have shifted which will alleviate pain.

Myofascial Release is effective at treating both Children and Adults. As Children develop in utero, they form their fascial web. This web can become restricted from positioning within mothers body and or from the birthing process.

Myofascial Release treatments are effective, but not limited in treating the following conditions:
• Neck Pain
• Migraine / Headache
• Sports injuries
• Painful Scars & Adhesions

• Jaw / TMJ Pain
• Sciatica
• Chronic Pain

Fascia
What is fascia?
Fascia is the connective tissue surrounding every cell in our body in one uninterrupted and continuous 3-D web like structure like that of a spider’s web. It provides support and flexibility to all structures. Inflammation from Injury or illness, trauma, and poor posture can cause the fascial fibers to tighten, shorten, thicken and adhere. These adhesion’s begin to form a barrier exerting abnormal pressure on nerves, muscles, blood vessels, bones, organs and even the brain, resulting in inefficient functioning, and depriving the very cells (it is supposed to support) with the nourishment they need to survive.

How is Fascia Treated?
MFR sessions are usually one-hour in duration and each session is unique to each individual. During your first appointment an in-depth evaluation is taken to observe your posture and discuss any pains or physical conditions that cause you discomfort or restrict movements. The therapist will go through a series of evaluations to feel, observe and sense where varied degrees of pressure, stretching, kneading and palpitation will help eliminate pain and restore range of motion.

The therapist will assess to treat the cause of the problem and to eliminate the symptoms in order to make lasting structural changes. If the therapist does not touch an area that you feel pain during a session rest assured the therapist is truly treating the problem. To understand this, think of a wet sweater laid out flat and imagine what happens when you pull one corner…you affect the whole sweater. Our fascial system works in the same way.

Your MFR Session – how to prepare and what to wear:

Please make sure you arrive to the session without wearing any lotions. The use of lotion prevents the therapist from being able to have traction on the skin. Bring it along and you are welcome to apply after the session if you are going about your day after your session. When you come in for your treatment it is best that you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Ladies: can wear shorts and an exercise bra or just your bra and underwear if you like. Gentlemen: can wear shorts or your boxers are just fine. This is up to you and your comfort level.
